Metallic Plaster Dining Room

Share

The nicest thing about metallic plaster is depending on how you apply it you can stop and start when you have the time.  I, like so many of you, barely have time to breathe let alone squeeze in a home project so I found myself picking away at the walls when I had a spare minute.  Mostly after 9:30 in the evening after dinner, clean up, 2 loads of laundry, homework –the kids, not mine:), checking email etc…

It was just me and my cute little Japanese friend, the trowel.  I spent so much time with my little friend I even gave her a name.  “Suki” which means “to like” in Japanese.

Hey, you try to plaster late at night after drinking 4 cups of coffee and see if you don’t get a little nutty!

But I digress…

Little Suki (she is the pointy trowel on the left) and I put on 1 gallon and 3 quarts of metallic plaster over a few days.

FYI:  Be Careful! The trowel is sharp.  Let me repeat that–the trowel is sharp.

First I taped everything off as if I was getting ready to paint.  The plaster is thick and doesn’t splatter but I wanted to make sure I could get the trowel close enough to everything without having to try and clean it off later.

Kudos to Modern Masters for their excellent adhesion on almost every surface!  Using my extreme scientific testing procedure –getting some on my fingers–it took a couple of days to wear off and when I accidentally spilled some on the wood floor, it was a beast to clean off.  It really stuck!  Eventually it dried up enough to be gently scraped off the floor but I would definitely not recommend leaving your floors unprotected!

I chose to use 3 colors:  Tungsten, Antique Lace and Brass.  I applied one light coat of brass over my old walls which were venetian plaster in a gold color.  It worked great to go right over the top of the venetian.  I had never sealed it and it was a Modern Masters product.  The great thing about their products is they all work together depending on the crazy look you come up with.

After the 1st coat of Brass, I sporadically applied areas of Tungsten  and Antique Lace before the last layer of Brass.  I applied each color randomly and with a tiny bit of texture.  I wanted to have more that just one color influencing the finish layer.

Finally the last layer of Brass went over the whole works.  I chose to add some Antique Lace in at the same time to lighten the look.  Picture the bottom of the trowel as a peanut butter sandwich with the PB the Brass and the smear of jelly the Antique lace.  I troweled this layer tightly over the walls to create an almost smooth surface when I was done.  The more you trowel this product, the shinier it gets.  I heard from a couple of other Modern Masters fans that you are polishing the colored mica in the plaster which gives it extra shimmer.

Here are some examples of the extreme textures you can get with the Metallic Plaster…

Here are a couple pictures of my old venetian walls…

Here is what I came up with…

I am still working on the decorations for the buffet…

Here is a close up of the finish.  You can see some hints of the gold peeking through towards the top.

The comments from my family were positive.  Although my 13 year old is a little sad the walls don’t feel like cold marble now that the venetian is cover up.  My 8 year old said they feel nice and kind of soft.  My mom and husband both said they feel like suede.  (With all of this ‘wall feeling’ going on, I’m just glad the product is so washable :)

I think the walls look great!  I may still do some stenciling over the top but for now I think I will give my arm a rest.

Metallic Plaster is available in over 50 colors.  (some colors are special order but for a finish this fabulous, it is worth a short wait!!)  We stock 19 colors in quarts and gallons.  Stop in and check them out!!
