At Seven’s we help people all the time with tips and tricks to make painting easier. Here is a list of things we recommend “not” to do when undertaking a painting project…
Household Hazardous Waste
January 21, 2011
We get a lot of questions about what to do with left-over paints.
Surprisingly, left-over LATEX or WATERBASED paints can be dried out and tossed in your normal trash. We sell packets of paint hardener which you add to a partially filled gallon of paint. After a few days it should be dry enough to dispose of.
SOLVENT BASED or OIL BASED paints must never be placed in the trash but instead disposed of safely with the Kent County Department of Public Works.

Fall Maintenance Checklist
October 4, 2010
BRRR! Well, that didn’t take long. Was it really just a couple of weeks ago I was complaining about the heat? Yes, yes it was. I’m just never happy!
Instead of counting the goosebumps on my arms, I figured I should get a list together of all the things I have to get done before the snow flies. Thankfully the cooler weather is a sufficient motivator for me to tackle a few things–that and the warmth I will generate by getting up, moving around and working around the exterior of my house.
Spring Cleaning!!!
March 8, 2010
After all of the sunshine lately I am convinced that Spring is coming.
I heard a robin singing last week and thought, “Spring is coming!” Of course, after commenting about it to my husband, he informed me that not all robins migrate south over the winter. Well, whatever! I am choosing to take it as a sign of spring. Time for me to get cleaning.
I have been enjoying the sunshine and loving the fact I can get in my car to go home and not shiver the entire way!
Another spring indicator: My dog is shedding large amounts of fur (thanks a lot, Elvis) .
Yet another spring indicator: My dirty windows are dappling the sunlight as it shines through them. Yuck.
Another sunshine side effect: Wow, my house is dusty!!
And another: The fingerprints are showing everywhere. Yikes!
Attention, family, I am about to begin spring cleaning! I know how much you guys love it when I do. Maybe you should make plans to go hang out at a friend’s or have Dad take you to the movies. I am planning on turning the house upside down and inside out blasting music the entire time.
For those of you who loath cleaning, Seven’s has a bunch of cleaning products to make your job easier. For those of you who love cleaning we can help you out too! I fall in the latter category. I come from a long line of cleaners. No, not professional cleaners, just very fussy women who care about their homes. In fact, my daughter’s teacher commented on it during conferences. Doesn’t every parent like to hear how their child airs the dirty laundry, so to speak, when she tells the teacher how her mom is always cleaning? ( Seven year-olds talk a lot, don’t they?) I am convinced cleaning is a nature vs. nurture thing. That same daughter is definitely missing the ‘clean gene’. Her teacher compares Teagan’s desk to an ‘overstuffed suitcase’ and I am pretty sure ‘toxic waste’ was mentioned as well. Sorry, Mrs. F. I am trying.
Oops, I am getting of topic! My favorite cleaners from Seven’s are Challenger, Dirtex and PolyCare. Wonderful, effective and nice smelling. I use them during my weekly cleaning. What I am in dire need of right now is some Dirtex. Plain old glass cleaner does not work nearly as well. (too streaky)
I use Challenger for everything. Check out the link and you can watch a video on its many uses. Try it straight out of the bottle for major messes and diluted for general cleaning. It really takes care of any greasy, sticky problem. I love it for cleaning my fiberglass tub and surround too. I have used it on just about everything inside the house and on a ton of areas outside. It is my favorite garage floor cleaner. You can use it on decks, siding, RV’s, vehicle wheels, BBQ grill grates, etc…Shall I continue?
The PolyCare is the best floor cleaner ever! It does not streak and you don’t have to rinse. You can get a mop with washable terry cloth covers to cover large surface areas. I use it on my laminate floors and on my wood cabinets. It smells great. Light and fresh. Sometimes I just leave the cap off of the bottle so I can smell it. I know that sounds weird but try it!
Seven’s also carries cotton rags, sponges and other helpful cleaning items. Here are a few cleaning tips from Seven’s customers: Buy an inexpensive paint brush for cleaning dust out of tricky places. Use an extension pole with a cotton rag tied to it to reach the cobwebs in the corner. Try Challenger Cleaner to pretreat grease stained clothes before laundering them.
Stop in at Seven’s before you get started on your cleaning. We will get you hooked up with the stuff you need when you feel the need to clean. Oh, and if you drive by my house and see my family out on the sidewalk make sure to honk your horn to let them know you like cleaning too. I won’t be able to hear you over the radio and the vacuum.
Happy Cleaning Everyone!!
New Year’s Resolution
January 12, 2010
I hope it’s not too late to talk about starting the New Year off with a painting project.
I don’t know about you, but I barely made it until midnight on New Year’s Eve. I did stay awake long enough to make a resolution or 2. Along with the usual eat healthier, lose a couple of pounds and be a kinder person, I vowed to become more organized. I have long admired those meticulously straightened, labeled, containerized spaces featured in various magazines. So this year I am going to get my house whipped into shape.
